God works in patterns that help his children clearly recognize His voice and ways
When I think of Lehi praying " with all of his heart, in behalf of his people " ( 1 Nephi 1:5 ) and the events that proceeded this prayer, I am reminded of the pattern in which God speaks to His children. God knows each of His children very personally and deeply. I know from experience that we each have individual experiences in which the Lord will speaks to us, based upon our own specific personality and needs, but He has also has presented a pattern in which we can easily distinguish His works and His voice.
I find it to be very loving that the Lord, knowing that Lehi would be familiar through scriptures study, in ways that He has spoken to prophets in the past, chose to speak with him, after the same manner. As Lehi saw the pillar of fire upon the rock before him, It seems likely that Lehi might have recalled his knowledge of Moses seeing a burning bush as he was being called to be the prophet.( Exodus 3:2 ) I am thankful that today through so many records of the scriptures we have a solid pattern that we can look upon, to strengthen our testimonies. I know that God speaking to His prophets is a pattern after which He works, and I am certain that all those who study the Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine and Covenants will become more familiar with His ways and patterns that he has been presenting for thousands and thousands of years.
